Professional Development and Lifelong Learning Leads to Innovation in the TCS Classroom

Thanks to the incredible support from the TCS Atlanta school community through our Annual Giving Campaign (AGC), our teachers and staff are able to continue to learn and grow in their areas of expertise through a variety of professional development opportunities. Our teachers travel near and far to hone their skills and learn the most innovative and best practices in their fields.

From working with diversity educator Rosetta Lee on implementing an anti-bias curriculum to developing a Responsive Classroom Approach which benefits the social and emotional growth of students, to being at the forefront of math education with TCS Math Specialist Tom Pittard and Singapore Math, the Annual Giving Campaign funds provide invaluable opportunities to our staff that help make our TCS classrooms the most innovative, fun and effective spaces for learning.

Because of our Atlanta school community’s generosity, the Annual Giving Campaign makes a real difference in helping our teachers and faculty take their learning to new heights and have a thorough understanding of the latest research and developments in childhood education.

In their own words, here are just a few ways AGC funds made a positive impact on our educators and in the classrooms:

Embracing Diversity through Anti-Bias Curriculum
“Rosetta (Lee) gave us activities and appropriate language to facilitate conversations in our classroom around human differences,” said Second Grade Teacher Nicole Hickman-Calix about working with Rosetta on implementing a new anti-bias curriculum. “The more Rosetta spoke, the more it became clear to me how important this work is for the students and adults in our community.”

Bank Street College “Where Did Our Garden Go” Conference
“Thank you, TCS, for allowing me first-rate preparation that emphasizes the full development of the child and the importance of play,” said Kindergarten Teacher Michele Savio, after attending the Bank Street College of Education Kindergarten Conference in New York. “Thank you for trusting me to nurture my students’ innate love of learning. Thank you for supporting my own capacities for creativity, autonomy, and integrity.”

It all adds up…Transitioning to Singapore Math
“TCS is committed to supporting our teachers as we transition to Singapore Math. We started two years ago with outside experts, and this past year we were able to hire Tom (Pittard), a full-time math specialist, who has been instrumental in supporting our teachers,” said Melissa Scott, TCS director of research and learning design. “Tom provides hands-on training, workshops, tutorials, coaching and as-needed support for our faculty, students and parents.”
