When the school year comes to an end, exploration, play and discovery continue at TCS with our full slate of summer camps that serve students from around the metro Atlanta area and even visiting campers from around the globe.
“TCS summer camps take learning to a new level because they are designed to support risk taking and spark curiosity,” says EDSL Staff Liaison/Team Lead Kareemah Abdullah. “We value building relationships with our campers, and we respect diversity in learning styles. We encourage campers to attempt and accomplish things they never thought possible.”
Play- and project-based learning continues through the summer at TCS with camps such as Outdoor Explorers, Inventor’s Workshop, Arbotics, and more. Last summer, campers were asked the question “How can we use the heat from the sun as a cooking source?” Campers then designed and created their own solar ovens that they tested and used to bake pizzas.
Last summer, campers took on a tree top challenge and completed an obstacle course suspended in the canopy 55 ft. above the forest floor. Through the experience, some campers had to overcome fears.
Kareemah recalled one of the littlest camper’s brave learning experience at the tree top course: “Once the campers were in their harnesses and ready to begin, one of our 3-year-old campers froze and didn’t want to participate stating, ‘I’m too little to climb trees.’ We began with encouragement, building her confidence and self-esteem. Once she started believing she could do it, she took the ropes and conquered the obstacle course! We encouraged her along the way and could see her confidence grow as she continued climbing higher and higher. When she finished the course, she was excited and wanted to do it again. At TCS summer camp, we work hard to make great memorable experiences for all our campers.”
Seventh and eighth graders can build on their leadership skills through the TCS Counselor in Training (CIT) program. “Our CIT’s learn the importance of teamwork, collaboration, responsibility and conflict resolution,” Kareemah explains. “The CIT program is the first phase of the Summer Leadership Academy where participants develop their leadership skills by working with our camp programs. After their first year of college, our CIT campers are eligible to become a TCS summer camp counselor. We’ve had several students begin as CIT’s and eventually become TCS faculty.”
Whether our campers are theater enthusiasts, budding scientists, social entrepreneurs or future counselors and teachers, curious minds gather at TCS to learn and grow all summer long.
