The Search Process

In May 2025, The Children’s School’s Board of Trustees and Head of School Roslyn Benjamin announced their mutual decision for Roz to step down as head of school at the end of the 2024-25 school year, and an interim head to lead the school during the 2025-26 school year.

The board engaged a consulting team from The Gowan Group, a respected search firm with deep expertise in independent school leadership, to spearhead the search for an interim head of school for the 2025 – 26 school year, followed by a search for a long-serving head of school to begin in fall of 2026. The following month, Elizabeth Miller was appointed interim head of school.

Community Participation Opportunities

Everyone in the TCS community had an opportunity to share their voice in the head of school search process.

One of the first ways families could participate was by attending a virtual parent forum with our consultants from The Gowan Group. These forums were designed to gather input on the qualities and characteristics you value most in our next long-term head of school and your hopes for TCS’s future. In addition, all families, faculty, and staff were invited to share their perspectives through a community-wide survey in August 2025, which provided valuable feedback to help guide the search process.

Search Process

In June 2025, The Children’s School launched a comprehensive and inclusive search for the next long-serving head of school to follow Elizabeth’s year as interim head.

The TCS Board established a search committee which will collaborate with the consultants to identify and interview candidates for the position. The search committee will ultimately recommend a candidate to be approved by the Board of Trustees. The members of that committee are identified below.

All members of the TCS community will have meaningful opportunities to engage in the search process. This includes virtual forumsin July and a community-wide survey in August to gather input on the qualities most valued in our next head of school. Finalist candidates will visit campus in the fall, and community members will be invited to meet them and ask questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who will make the final hiring decision?

The TCS Board of Trustees is responsible for hiring TCS’s head of school. During the search process, the board – through the search committee – will seek input from the entire community, but the final hiring decision will be made by the board.

Q: What is the role of the Search Committee?

It is the responsibility of the board to hire, support and evaluate its sole employee, the head of school. To this end, the board of trustees has appointed a Head of School Search Committee. The search committee, along with the search consultant firm, The Gowan Group, is tasked with directing the new head of school search process from start to finish. The committee will coordinate input from TCS’s various constituencies, work with the search consultant to develop the detailed job/position description, and review the first round of candidates. They will then organize and conduct interviews with the semifinal and final candidates. At the end of the process, the search committee will present one candidate as a recommendation to the board of trustees. The final decision rests with the board. During the entire process, the search committee and the board will keep the TCS community informed and engaged while ensuring and respecting the confidentiality of the recruitment process.

Q: How can I be involved in the search? How can I give my input?

Community input in this process is very important. As part of their research to create a profile for the ideal candidate, The Gowan Group consultants will interview TCS community members, and conduct virtual forums. That qualitative research will inform the creation of surveys that will be sent to all faculty, staff, and families for your individual input on the characteristics of the head of school as well as the unique aspects of the TCS experience. The search committee will vet the initial pool of candidates and identify a group of semi-finalists who will be interviewed in a confidential setting. The need to maintain confidentiality primarily helps to ensure that expressing interest in this position will not compromise those potential candidates who have not yet informed their current schools of their possible interest in a career move. The finalists (usually 3-4 individuals) will be invited to campus and have an opportunity to meet with members of the TCS community through a variety of venues and forums.

Q: What is the role of TCS’s faculty, staff and administration in the process?

The search consultants will engage faculty, staff and administration in their research to establish the ideal profile for the next head of school.  The faculty, staff and administration will also be actively engaged later in the search by meeting candidates when they visit the school, welcoming visitors into their classrooms, and providing other means of input as requested by the search committee.

Q: Will the head of school search impact my child’s experience at TCS?

Our faculty, staff and administrators are committed to our primary goal, which is to provide your child with an outstanding educational experience and foster an environment that balances challenging academics, strong social-emotional skills, and joyful, hands-on experiences within a community where every voice is valued.

Q: When can I meet the finalists?

Finalists’ names and bios will be released 24 hours before their arrival. Their candidacy remains confidential until that time. This common practice is done out of respect for the finalists, all of whom are employed and must notify their respective constituencies.

Q: How long will the Head of School (HOS) search last? When do you expect to hire the next HOS?

A head of school search takes between 6-12 months. Our goal is to select a new head of school before the end of this calendar year, with the new head to start on July 1, 2026.

Q: How will the school community be kept informed about the search?

Updates regarding the search will be shared through periodic emails to the community when particular milestones have been reached. Updates will also be made to this webpage and in “Happenings,” the school’s weekly e-newsletter.

Q: I have a question for the search committee. How do I contact them?

You can send an email to TCS-HOS-Search@tcsatl.org, and a representative from The Gowan Group or a search committee member will respond.
