Why Families Choose The Children’s School: Preparation for What’s Next

When families begin their school search, they’re often asking the same questions: Will my child be challenged? Will they be known? Will they be ready for high school and a rapidly changing world?

At The Children’s School, we’ve built our program to answer them clearly.

A School Designed for Childhood and Everything That Comes After

We are a preschool through grade 8 school by design. That matters more than it might seem.

In many K–12 environments, resources, attention, and culture naturally center on the high school years. At TCS, our entire program is intentionally focused on the years when children are building their academic and social-emotional foundation.

Our teachers are experts in these stages of development. Our students aren’t rushed. Childhood is not something to outgrow here. Instead, it’s something we protect and value.

Challenging Academics, Taught in a Way That Sticks

Families sometimes wonder: can a nurturing environment also be academically challenging?

At TCS, the answer is yes because our approach is hands-on and minds-on. Through project-based learning, students don’t just receive information. They investigate, question, create, and apply what they’re learning in meaningful ways.

A math concept might come to life through collaboration and real-world problem-solving. Writing becomes a way to express original thinking. Science is explored through experimentation and discovery.

The result: Students develop deep understanding, not just surface-level knowledge. They learn how to think, not just what to think.

These are the skills that matter most in high school and in a world shaped by constant change.

Learning That Extends Beyond the Classroom

Some of the most powerful learning happens outside beyond the classroom.

Our Outdoor Education Program, a cornerstone of TCS for more than 45 years, takes students on 12 overnight trips by the time they graduate. Beginning in third grade, students hike, kayak, study ecosystems, and build independence through shared experiences in nature.

Closer to campus, our Midtown Atlanta location gives students access to museums, cultural institutions, and real-world learning opportunities within walking distance.

In Middle Grades, students take even more ownership of their learning through electives and clubs they design and lead themselves.

These experiences build confidence, leadership, and a sense of agency that can’t be taught through textbooks.

A Community Where Students Are Known

Ask our families what stands out most, and you’ll hear this again and again: “Teachers truly know my child.”

With small class sizes and strong relationships at the center of everything we do, students are seen as individuals with unique strengths, perspectives, and identities.

We are a diverse and inclusive community where every child is encouraged to explore who they are and how they want to show up in the world.

That sense of belonging is what allows students to take risks, build confidence, and grow into thoughtful, engaged people.

Prepared for High School and Beyond

Another common question we hear: what happens after eighth grade?

Our students go on to a wide range of high schools—public and independent, progressive and traditional—and they succeed.

Ninety percent of our graduates are admitted to their first-choice high school.

More importantly, they arrive prepared. They know how to advocate for themselves, think critically, collaborate with others, and engage deeply in their learning.

As one parent shared: “They all do well because they’re prepared. They know who they are, and they know how to be a good friend.”

A Different Kind of School Experience

At The Children’s School, students experience challenging academics in a nurturing environment. They learn through doing. They are known, supported, and encouraged to grow at their own pace.

They leave ready for high school and to navigate a complex, changing world with curiosity, confidence, and purpose.
