Looking Ahead to High School: Alumni Voices and Parent Wisdom

by Justin Ryder, Director of Upper School

On October 15, our Looking Ahead to High School event was an evening of honest reflection, laughter, and meaningful perspective. Moderated by Cherise Ogle (parent of Kymbree ‘21 and Cyrus ‘23), the conversation included current high school students and their parents, who shared insights about their transition from TCS to a variety of public and independent schools across Atlanta.

A huge thank you to our incredible student and parent alumni panelists for offering their time, candor, and stories. Their reflections reminded us of what makes the TCS experience so impactful: our graduates leave with a strong sense of self, curiosity, and academic and social skills that serve them well in high school and beyond.

Highlights from the discussion:

  • Social readiness shines. TCS graduates described feeling comfortable engaging adults and peers, joining new clubs or teams, and “finding their people” in larger school settings.
  • Academic preparation runs deep. Strong math, writing, collaboration, and self-advocacy skills helped alumni navigate higher expectations and new forms of assessment.

  • Growth areas are normal. Students noted that adjusting to more frequent tests, heavier homework load, and faster-paced note-taking took time — and that TCS’s habits of planning, reflection, and communication made the difference.

  • Learning differences and self-advocacy. Alumni with accommodations shared that the confidence to talk openly with teachers and request support was one of the most valuable skills they carried forward.

  • Choosing the right fit. Parents and students alike emphasized focusing on the environment where a child can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally; rather than chasing perfection.

The evening ended with a reminder that the high school process is a marathon, not a sprint. Transitions can be both exciting and emotional, and every family’s journey looks a little different. Still, one message was universal: our students are ready, and they carry the heart of the Wolf Pack wherever they go.
