Finding Her Voice: How TCS Middle School Prepared Jordan Zackery to Thrive in High School and Beyond

Transitioning from middle school to high school can feel like stepping into a whole new world, but for TCS alum Jordan Zackery (’25), it’s been a journey of growth, curiosity, and self-discovery. Now a freshman at Benjamin E. Mays High School (’29), Jordan reflects on the skills and values she developed at The Children’s School that continue to guide her.

Academic Readiness and Curiosity
Jordan describes the jump to high school as “easier than expected,” crediting TCS for helping her build strong study habits and self-advocacy skills. From managing assignments to speaking up in class, the foundation she gained at TCS allows her to navigate a variety of courses and explore new interests confidently. “Even when school tries to downplay creativity for a job that’s strictly grey and dull, I still add the little droplets of color to remind myself of who I am,” she shares.

Her recent summer experience at Harvard University through the Veritas program, a network of Saturday schools for gifted and talented youth, further highlighted the importance of curiosity and engagement. Jordan valued the opportunity to collaborate with motivated students from across the country and the world, exploring topics from culture to systemic issues like racism and white supremacy. These experiences reinforced her belief that pursuing one’s passions—whether music, art, or academics—can be just as important as traditional measures of success.

Social-Emotional Growth and Self-Advocacy
Jordan emphasizes that one of the most important lessons from TCS is self-advocacy. “If you just let things slide beside you without putting up a fight, it is always a losing game. We learn to speak for a reason,” she says. This skill has helped her transition smoothly into the larger, more complex social environment of high school, where collaboration, empathy, and confidence are essential.

The tight-knit, supportive community at TCS also left a lasting impression. Teachers like Art Specialist Kelley Taylor encouraged Jordan to honor her artistic values, fostering a sense of identity and confidence that continues to inspire her, even in classes she doesn’t currently take.

Looking Ahead
Jordan’s advice to current TCS middle schoolers is both practical and aspirational: “Study. Even if you think you’re smart enough, there are always people smarter than you. You’re as great as the person beside you, but you could always be better.” She’s excited to continue broadening her education, meeting new people, and developing as a person. “I am not a square on a piece of paper; I want to be like a blend of shapes,” she says.

For Jordan, TCS was a place to cultivate creativity, resilience, and confidence. These skills are helping her thrive academically, socially, and personally, setting the stage for a high school experience full of growth, exploration, and purpose.
