From TCS to Pace Academy: Academic and Social Skills That Help Students Thrive

(Left to Right: Jackson Carver ’23 and Grant Royston ’24)

When Grant Royston graduated from The Children’s School in 2024, he stepped confidently into high school at Pace Academy. Now, as a rising sophomore (Class of 2028), Grant reflects on how his TCS experience set him up to succeed academically and socially.

A Smooth Academic Transition

Grant admits that the biggest adjustment to high school was learning how to study more intensively.

“I wasn’t really used to studying a ton, but all of a sudden I had to study a lot,” he says. “It wasn’t anything I couldn’t handle because I had already learned how to overcome challenges and take them on.”

At TCS, Grant learned study techniques—like using flashcards, organizing notes, and testing himself—that he now uses daily.

“In eighth grade, we had whole discussions about different ways to study. I still use those techniques now, and they help me a lot.”

Social-Emotional Strengths that Last

TCS’s commitment to the Building Character and Community (BCC) traits also shaped Grant’s high school experience. He says these lessons made him open to meeting new people and helping classmates adjust.

“I’ve always been good at making friends, but TCS taught me to be open and accepting of others. I found my people quickly and helped other new kids do the same.”

Community and Connection Matter

Looking back, Grant says what he misses most about TCS is its tight-knit community.

“At TCS, with 25–30 kids per grade, you’re friends with everyone and know them really well. At Pace, I know people, but not in the same way. TCS just had a stronger sense of community.”

He also credits his TCS teachers with making a lasting impact.

“The best teachers I’ve ever had were at TCS. You have a stronger bond because they see every side of you, and they really know you.”

Prepared to Excel

Grant’s story shows how TCS’s rigorous academics and focus on social-emotional growth prepare students to excel in high school and beyond. From study skills to friendships, Grant continues to draw on what he learned at TCS every day.
