Middle Grades’ Players Take the Stage with Bold “Beetlejuice Jr.” Production

This year, The Children’s School’s Middle Grades’ Players embarked on a unique and bold journey as they presented Beetlejuice Jr. on March 1 and 2 at 7 Stages in Little Five Points.

The students, eager for a more mature production, expressed their desire to take on a show that would reflect their growing interests and deeper themes. And so, after careful consideration and a search for the perfect show, the directors finally landed on “Beetlejuice Jr.,” a musical that explores themes of death, family change and the challenges faced by teens.

The directors were initially uncertain about how to approach these production’s sensitive topics in a way that aligned with the school’s core values of Building Character and Community (BCC). However, after multiple discussions and a willingness to follow the students’ lead, they took the plunge.

“Beetlejuice Jr. is a far cry from the cult classic film of the ’80s,” said the show’s director, Christy Robinson. “It’s thought-provoking and provides a safe space for us to explore the complex emotions of disconnect, confusion and the challenges of growing up, all while staying true to our values.”

The production, which was described as a thrilling and somewhat spooky experience, was a community effort. Families and friends rallied together, lending props, set pieces, and even costumes for the production.

As the curtains rose on “Beetlejuice Jr.,” the Middle Grades’ Players shared a performance that showcased not only their growth as artists, but also their ability to tackle real-world issues with sensitivity and maturity. The show was a memorable and meaningful experience for both performers and audience members alike.

“I’ve seen both our children and adults stretch and grow in amazing ways,” said Christy.
