Authentically TCS: Lynn Wright

Miniature, handmade origami birds float from the ceiling, automatons and scribble machines dot the shelves, and polarized light mosaics hang from the windows in Lynn and Joe’s fourth grade TCS classroom. When Lynn leaned in to show me how to operate the scribble machine by connecting the wires and allowing the markers to dance across the table, I knew instantly that with a degree in Fine Arts, Lynn is dedicated to devising an innovative and creative curriculum for the sciences as well.

Last summer, a new and exciting opportunity awaited Lynn’s career after a representative from Georgia Tech’s GIFT program made a visit to TCS’s campus. This prestigious program offered an internship opportunity in which teachers from across Georgia participate in a professional development summer course to enhance their mathematics, science or technology skills, knowledge, and abilities. Along with fellow 4th grade teacher Jocelyn, Lynn was one of thirteen accepted applicants into the program, statewide! For seven weeks, Lynn studied alongside Dr. Srinivasaroa, who specializes in the study of liquid crystals and polarized microscopy.

Excited to apply what she learned to her classroom, Lynn developed a unit in which students investigated waves and light using tools such as mirrors, lenses and prisms. For their final project, students made polarized light mosaics that hang proudly from the windows. As a result of her GIFT experience, Lynn feels more confident as a science teacher and was able to critically reflect on one of her previous science units to make it even better!

Aside from developing enriching academics, Lynn serves her community every year by knitting winter accessories to give to those in need. She even offers knitting lessons to the students so they can join in on the season of giving! You rock, Lynn!
