MODA @ TCS: Make Useless Things & Robots

Rising Grades 5 – 8

Inspired by Chinogu, the Japanese art of inventing silly and useless gadgets to solve everyday problems, and Simone Giertz, a Swedish inventor, maker, robotics enthusiast, TV host, and professional YouTuber, this virtual camp is guaranteed to be crazy fun because we’re going to make things that we hardly need at all. Imagine designing and building a robot that will brush your teeth for you or one that will stir your soup until it’s cool.

Why attend this camp?

  • Making useless things is a great way to learn how stuff works
  • Use design thinking mindsets as you brainstorm, prototype, and test your ideas
  • Improve your STEM skills
  • Get comfortable with the idea that sometimes things you make don’t work the way you think they will — and that’s OK because that’s how we learn
  • Spend a lot of time laughing at your crazy ideas and those of your fellow designers

June 22 - 26
8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Defenders of the Planet: Designing Envirobots with LEGO Robotics

Rising Grades 3 – 5

We face a lot of challenges in our world. How do we limit pollution and protect the environment? How do we provide everyone with access to food and clean water? How do we clean up the oceans? Robots are already helping with many of these challenges, but we need more innovators thinking about how robots can make life on earth better for everyone. In this camp, young designers will design Enviro-Bots that tackle real-world environmental issues.

All around the world, robot developers and researchers are addressing some of the world’s biggest environmental problems, from Growbot, an unmanned vehicle that plants trees 10 times faster than a human can to Ocean One, a humanoid SCUBA diver that monitors deep coral reefs in the Red Sea. The designers, engineers, and scientists creating these robots are working together to make a difference.

In this week-long camp, you’ll study robots that are protecting the planet to see how they are designed and how they work. Then, campers will team up, choose an environmental issue that’s important to them, and design and prototype a robot that will make a difference.

Why attend this camp?

  • Prototype, refine, and test robots using LEGO NXT
  • Learn the technological ins-and-outs of LEGO Robotics (or refine those skills if you already have them)
  • Develop programming skills by using the Common Block Palette to code your build
  • Use sensors and mechanics needed to make your Envirobot successful
  • Practice design and engineering skills and to work collaboratively in teams
  • Develop creative confidence
  • Learn about and discuss the environmental challenges that we currently face

Camp takes place on the TCS campus.

Fashion and Jewelry Design

Rising Grades 6 – 8

Love fashion? Interested in sustainability and technology? This is the camp for you!

Spend a week learning about how upcycling and 3-D printing are changing fashion design. You’ll learn high-tech and low-tech skills that will help you express yourself as you design garments and jewelry for yourself or others. In this camp, you’ll learn about fashion history and trends while using upcycled materials and 3-D design and printing to create a style that’s all your own.

Why attend this camp?

  • Develop your cutting and sewing skills
  • Learn to use a sewing machine
  • Learn to follow a pattern
  • Learn to embroider, both by hand and digitally
  • Learn some simple circuitry as you explore e-textiles
  • Learn the basics of 3-D modeling and printing while you create jewelry, accessories, and fashion embellishments
  • Start thinking about fashion as a tool for self-expression and how to design clothes that look and feel the way you want them to
  • Spend time thinking and talking about the problems caused by “fast fashion” and about upcycling as an alternative to buying new things

Camp takes place on the TCS campus.
