Day School Electives & Athletics Nurture Talents, Strengthen Bonds, and Build Confidence

At The Children’s School, Day School Electives and TCS Athletics give students the opportunity to nurture talents, strengthen bonds, and build confidence. Whether a child participates in TCS Players, Athletics, or Voices, children create communities within these team-oriented environments that they may not have a connection to otherwise.

From theater to chorus to cross country, TCS offers something for every child!

Lessons learned on the stage or on the field are often applied to other social settings as well. Participation in arts and athletics gives children fuel for better functioning of the mind, cognition, self-regulation, and more. The combination of the academics and arts/athletics provides a stronger educational experience for children to remain fully engaged throughout the day.

“We believe that from the stage to the basketball court, these opportunities are all team sports.  Each require the development of one’s personal skill set that evolves into connecting with the larger group/team. Empathy, commitment, skill development, receiving constructive feedback, celebration of accomplishment and the recognition of challenge all enhance a student’s experience at TCS,” said Christy Robinson, director of extended day and summer learning at TCS.

In 2016, we implemented an athletics program that allowed students (grades 3 – 8) to participate in competitive athletics. Students in grades 3 – 5 compete on intramural teams and middle school students (grades 6 – 8) compete in the Metro Atlanta Athletic conference against local Atlanta schools. Students were most excited to be on teams with their classmates and represent the Wolf Pack!

By understanding how to perform a role and work with a team to achieve one common goal, children learn the importance of teamwork.

“Playing a lead role in Shrek Jr. was different from anything I’ve ever done before! I knew all my lines and my songs, and I practiced outside of school to work on characterization,” said Payton, TCS alum ’19 who played Fiona in 2018.
