Last month, Maryann and Alison’s class had a an ice cream and Italian ice sale to benefit Heifer International, a charity that works with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the earth. The sale made $881!! The class researched which animal option would best benefit families in need. Then, they wrote persuasive essays to convince each other of the best choice for a donation. After a vote, it was clear that most of the students wanted to donate water buffaloes. Since the class had enough money for two water buffaloes, but not three, they decided to donate two water buffalo, a pig, a goat, rabbits and honeybees. This included all of the other animals that were represented in an essay. The class had fun, learned a lot and felt good about helping families. Way to go, first grade!!
